Author of novels, plays and short stories, W. Somerset Maugham is one of the most well-known British authors of the 20th century. He was born in Paris, in 1874. At the age of 10 he loses his parents and has to return to England. He studies literature and philosophy at Heidelberg University and he goes to medical school in London.
In 1917, during the Russian Revolution he becomes a spy for The British Intelligence, experience which later reflected in the volume Ashenden: Or the British Agent (1928), considered to be a great inspiration for the contemporary literature about espionage, being a great influence on the masters of the genre: Graham Greene, John Le Carre or Ian Flemming. He makes his debut with the novel Liza of Lambeth (1897). He was first known for his plays, for example, Lady Frederick, (first produced as a play in 1907), Jack Straw (first produced as a play in 1908), The Tenth Man (first produced as a play in 1910), which made him very popular. His first novel, Robie (1915) brings him fame, followed by The Moon and Sixpence (1919, probably his most well-known book), The Painted Veil (1925), Cakes and Ale: or, The Skelton in the Cupboard (1930), Up at the Villa (1941), The Razor’s Edge (1944), Catalina (1948). His famous volumes of stories, The Trembling of a Leaf (1921) or Six Stories Written in the First Person Singular (1928), considered masterpieces of the English literature, inspired the film industry too. He also wrote travel books and essays (The Summing Up, 1938, Points of View, 1958). W. Somerset Maugham died in 1965 in Nice.
