Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoi

Leo Tolstoy (1828 - 1910) – famous Russian writer, his works are well-known for the way the individualism and the national become universal. Starting with his autobiographical trilogy (Childhood, Boyhood and Youth, written between 1852 and 1857) ,the reader can see that the main themes of his work are about the complexity of human nature. In his story The Cassacks, the hero is a young aristocrat who rediscovers the joys given to man by nature and the integrity of the simple life.

His masterpiece, War and Peace (1863 – 1869) paints the life of the entire Russian society during the Napoleonic Wars; the historical events , the personal gain, the ways one thinks and the spontaneity of the simple life are presented to be the pieces of a natural – historical existence. At the end of 1870 the writer has a spiritual crisis, later amplified by the idea of moral accomplishment and simplicity (which became the basis of “tolstoism”). Works like the novel Resurrection (1889), the novella The Kreutzer Sonata or the dramas The Power of Darkness (1887) and The Living Corpse (1900) criticize the bureaucratic society, the institutions, the church (in 1901 the Russian Orthodox Church excommunicated him), the civilization and culture, the entire way of living of the “upper classes”. His interest goes also to the themes of death, sin, repentance and moral revival, themes that became the foundation of the novellas The Death of Ivan Ilych (1884 – 1886), Father Sergius (1890 – 1898) and Hadji Murat.
