Vladimir Nabokov



Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) is a famous writer of both Russian and English literature. After spending his childhood and teenage years in Russia, he emigrates with his family in England where he becomes a Cambridge student (1919); after a year the family moves to Berlin, where in 1922 his father (a leader of the constitutional-democrat party) is assassinated by a fascist terrorist. Graduating from college, he moved to Berlin where he starts writing using the name Vladimir Sirin. In 1937, after the fascists take charge, he moves to France and since 1940 he lives in The United States.

When describing his own life, he calls himself, rightfully:” an American writer, born in Russia, went to collage in England, where he studied French literature before leaving for fifteen years in Germany.” After he established himself in the USA, he writes mostly in English, using his real name. In 1960 he returns to Europe, in Switzerland, where he spends the rest of his life.The most important books that he wrote in Russian are Mary (1926), King, Queen, Knave (1928), The Luzhin Defense (1929), The Eye (1930), Glory (1932), Laughter in the dark (1933), Despair (1936), Invitation to a Beheading (1938), The Gift ( 1937-1938).
His first important novel written in English is The Real Life of Sebastian Knight (1941), followed by Bend Sinister (1947), Pnin (1957), Lolita (Paris, 1955, New York, 1958), Pale Fire (1962), Ada or Ardor: A Family Chronicle (1969), Transparent Things (1972), Look at the Harlequins! (1974).
Nabokov published two poetry volumes written in Russian (The Empyrean Path, 1923, The Cluster, 1923) and one in English (Poems, 1959). He wrote many stories, some of them included in Nabokov’s Dozen (1975), and Tyrants Destroyed (1975). He also wrote many studies on Universal and Russian literature and an autobiographical novel, Speak, Memory (1966).

At the age of 10 he loses his parents and has to return to England. He studies literature and philosophy at Heidelberg University and he goes to medical school in London.
